This year, the American Thoracic Society’s International Conference (ATS) took place in San Diego, US on May 16 – May 21. The ATS conference is one of the leading scientific meetings in the field of respiratory medicine attended by clinicians, researchers as well as patient advocates. The results presented there are thought to significantly influence pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine worldwide.
Awards and Grants
We sincerely congratulate our colleague Dr. Gabor Kovacs who won the award “Forschungspreis 2014 der René Baumgart-Stiftung”. This award is given for scientific studies in the field of pulmonary hypertension. This year it was awarded on March 27th in the frame of the 55th Congress of the German Society for Pulmonology and Respiratory Medicine in Bremen, Germany. Dr. Gabor Kovacs was acclaimed for his excellent work about “Zero reference level for right heart catheterization.”
We are proud to announce that our colleague, Dipl.-Ing. Slaven CRNKOVIC, PhD, won the "Josef Krainer-Förderungspreis 2014" for his excellent performance in medical research.

We proudly announce that our colleague MICHAEL HELMBERGER won the Best Paper Award on the Conference “MIUA 2013: Medical Image Understanding and Analysis”. The title of his paper and oral presentation is: “Tortuosity of pulmonary vessels correlates with pulmonary hypertension”.
Furthermore, he and four other conference participants won the Bursary Award which leads to the reimbursement of the conference fee -- Congratulations!
Our colleague Dr. CHANDRAN NAGARAJ won the PH UP2DATE Award 2013. These awards for basic research are granted every year to two young researchers who investigate pulmonary hypertension.
One of the main research foci of our institute is to establish a suitable method for a non-invasive and early assessment of pulmonary hypertension (PH). In 2012, Dr. ZOLTÁN BÁLINT, Prof. Dr. HORST OLSCHEWSKI, Dr. GABOR KOVACS and DI MICHAEL PIENN concentrated their investigations on the cardiac output which is an important diagnostic and prognostic factor in the haemodynamic evaluation of patients with PH.
The Austrian Society for Pneumology (ÖPG), supported by the company Takeda, has announced four ATS travel grants (EUR 3.000.-each) for the participation in the American Thoracic Society International Conference in Philadelphia, US in May 2013.
Our colleague VALENTINA BIASIN successfully applied for this grant and won the pize for her poster. -- Congratulations!
The Austrian Society for Pneumology (ÖPG) had announced three „Short Term Fellowships“ (EUR 5000.- each) provided by the companies Böhringer Ingelheim, AstraZeneca, and GlaxoSmithKline. The fellowships should enable the winners to learn a new scientific technique abroad and then establish it in Austria. Here our colleague Dr. VASILE FORIS successfully applied for this fellowship with the topic “Isolation and characterization of circulating endothelial cells and endothelial progenitor cells in pulmonary hypertension“. So he could visit the Descartes University Paris. In France, his supervisor Dr. David Smadja showed him how to isolate circulating mature endothelial cells.
