We are looking forward to Prof. JASON X.-J. YUAN who is going to visit our institute.
Date & Location: Tuesday, June 4th, 2013 at 4 PM in our seminar room
Title of the talk:
Pathogenic mechanisms of pulmonary arterial hypertension:
Role of CaSR and TRPC
Jason Yuan is currently a professor in the Department of Medicine and Pharmacology at the University of Illinois in Chicago, US. He also operates as director of two programs at the University of Illinois in Chicago: the pulmonary hypertension translational research program of the Institute for Personalized Respiratory Medicine and the program in pulmonary vascular disease and right heart function in the Center for Cardiovascular Research.
Jason Yuans research focus comprises the pathogenic mechanisms of pulmonary hypertension as well as the cellular mechanisms of hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction. He is an expert in electrophysiology of ion channels in smooth muscle and endothelial cells and in calcium signaling and regulation.
Since 2010, he is the Editor-in-Chief of the scientific journal "Pulmonary Circulation". Furthermore, he is an Editorial Board Member of the scientific journals "Respiratory Research", "Basic & Clinical Medicine", "American Journal of Physiology Lung Cellular and Molecular Physiology", "Clinical Medicine Insights: Circulation, Respiratory and Pulmonary Medicine", and "American Journal of Physiology Heart and Circulatory Physiology".
Our colleague Dr. CHANDRAN NAGARAJ won the PH UP2DATE Award 2013. These awards for basic research are granted every year to two young researchers who investigate pulmonary hypertension.

Dr. Chandran Nagaraj found out that the src tyrosine kinase is crucial for the potassium channel function in human pulmonary arteries. This finding leads to the displeasing assumption that if you inhibit the tyrosine kinases – as some modern cancer drugs do – this might result in pulmonary hypertension. The mechanisms behind the relationship between these special anti-cancer therapies and pulmonary hypertension were described for the first time in his work and published in the European Respiratory Journal 2013.
On Friday, 10th May 2013 Dr. Nagaraj was invited to the PH UP2DATE Conference in Munich where the award was presented to him and he gave a talk about the research he had done during his time as a PhD-student. -- Congratulations!
The Austrian Society for Pneumology (ÖPG), supported by the company Takeda, has announced four ATS travel grants (EUR 3.000.-each) for the participation in the American Thoracic Society International Conference in Philadelphia, US in May 2013.
Our colleague VALENTINA BIASIN successfully applied for this grant and won the pize for her poster. -- Congratulations!
