Low oxygen levels decrease adaptive immune responses and ameliorate experimental asthma in mice

In allergic asthma, the immune system develops a strong reaction against harmless environmental stimuli. It has been known for some time that prolonged stays at high altitudes can alleviate asthma, however, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. As higher altitudes are associated with reduced oxygen concentrations, we investigated how this may affect allergic asthma. Our study shows that low oxygen conditions dampens the allergic immune response, in particular the interaction of antigen-presenting cells with effector cells and that reduced immune activation translates to reduced asthma symptoms.
