2. RESPImmun Retreat in October 2023
In October 2023, the second RESPImmun Retreat took place in the auditorium of the Medical University of Graz with high-profile international guests. At the event, RESPImmun PhD students were able to present and discuss their latest research results in the field of chronic respiratory diseases with colleagues, faculty and invited guests.
The presentations were held in four thematic sessions and the panels were introduced by talks from the international guest speakers: Prof. Norbert Völkel (Virginia Commonwealth University and Frije University Medical Center, Amsterdam) gave a comprehensive introduction to the field of COPD, Prof. Bethany Moore (University of Michigan Medical School) spoke about the latest research findings in the field of pulmonary fibrosis and Prof. Wilfried Ellmeier (Medical University of Vienna) spoke about his research work in the field of immunology. The guest lectures were rounded off by Hana Cernecka (Evotec SE), who gave insights into research activities from the perspective of a pharmaceutical company.
In addition to the scientific presentations, the importance of Open Science and patient involvement in science projects was also discussed in a round-table discussion. Valentina Biasin, Simone Tischler (Med Uni Graz) and Claas Röhl (NF Kinder) emphasised the importance and benefits of involving patients in basic research projects and the added value achieved.
The PhD students Bernhard Reiter (1st place), Alankrita Rani and Rishi Rajesh (ex-aequo 2nd place), who were chosen by the guest speakers for the prize of the best student presentation, deserve special mention.
