SCIENCE4ALL: an example of public engagement and open innovation in basic research

SCIENCE4ALL, a project led by Valentina Biasin [Institute of Physiology and Pathophysiology, Medical University of Graz, and Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Pulmonary Vascular Research] is a Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) project in basic research.

The main objective of this project was to analyse whether training the public and also scientists, is a necessary step for a better implementation of public engagement in basic research. The results were diverse and ranged from the development of a dictionary with a great self-explanatory graphic of the lung (designed by Tatjana Hirschmugl – Scientific Illustration) to the development of guidelines for PPIE projects for other laboratories. Most importantly, we were able to prove that researchers and fellow researchers (=citizens) were able to communicate about science and develop new scientific ideas together after the training.

This project has been recently taken as a pioneering example by the European Platform Patient Engagement Resource Centre, launched by EATRIS (European Infrastructure for Translational Medicine) and EPF (European Patients’ Forum) together with affiliated partner EATG (European Aids Treatment Group).
